Therion Osmont was the Lord Protector of the Kingdom of Valley Pines from 339 to 358 SM. He is known for expanding the Harbingers of Purity’s power throughout Mystos by marrying his daughters to each Lord Protector.
Appearance and Personality
Therion had the average House Osmont appearance: orange-red hair and green eyes. His growth in political power, especially as he aged, gave him an almost mythological status within the Kingdom of Valley Pines. Yet, his appearance did not age, and at the time of his death, it is said that Therion still looked to be in his twenties.
He was ambitious, and after forging a relationship with the Harbingers, he wanted a world where only Zuts held power. He was known to be a loving father and a good husband, but he did have a child outside of marriage, although his lady wife treated the child kindly.
History
Childhood and Early Years
Therion Osmont was born in 315 SM and was the second son to Lord Leif Osmont and his lady wife, Atimia Ashe. He had an older brother named Bower, a younger brother named Agon, and two older step-sisters, Seldonna and Eirenem. Although Therion had a good relationship with his step-sisters, his mother, Lady Atimia, treated the girls terribly, causing Seldonna to commit suicide in 321. In 325, Eirenem and Bower ran away together, never to be found.
In 325 SM, now heir to Lord Protector, Lady Atimia forced Therion to marry Phurhace Rainwood of Easthaven. The marriage bore four children: Selda (born in 326 SM), Elphabe (born in 329 SM), Leram (born in 333 SM), and Klope (born in 342 SM). He also had two bastard daughters: Menes (born in 348 SM), whom he legitimized; and Rose (born in 363 SM), who was locked away by Phurhace and his other mistress. Leram Osmont legitimized Rose after his father's death.
Ruling as Lord Protector
After the birth of Leram, Therion started to rule more of Valley Pines in his father’s stead, but officially became Lord Protector in 339 SM. With his mother’s help, he created a good relationship with the Harbingers of Purity, shaping a prejudiced view of Maras. As Mystos plunged further into chaos throughout the decades, the Harbingers convinced Therion to expand his reach to the other kingdoms of Mystos. The plan became to marry his four daughters for political alliances, while Leram would marry Lady Dymia Woodlyn.
Therion’s decision to marry his four daughters off to each Lord Protector, marking the first generation of House Osmont to marry outside of the Kingdom of Valley Pines, was seen as ambitious but approved by the general population. Selda to Dhule Thoren; Elphabe married Joshmir Gardener; Klope to Necalli Ayers; and Menes to Narrik Wayward.
In 340 SM, Therion banned the Cotyledon, a group of re’ins who served as the kingdom’s elite law enforcement, and gave the responsibilities to the Harbingers. By 342, the Harbingers’ power expanded when they aligned with the Citadel. This alliance heightened the Habringers’ political, religious, and educational power. Therion burned the Library of Easthaven and the Royal Kingment Library, public repositories of ancient Arcan and human knowledge, in 354, destroying countless irreplaceable books.
Forced Retirement, the Failed Creation of Embassies, and Death
By the mid-fourth century, Mystosi kingdoms were gaining stability, and the Harbingers struggled to establish their footing within them. These setbacks angered the Citadel and Harbingers, leading Therion to retire in 356 and appoint his reckless son, Leram, as ruler. However, due to the Third Holy War (345-373 SM) in the Mountain Realm, Therion managed to solidify the Harbingers’ influence in the region through the marriage of his daughter, Menes, in 359. This move helped Therion regain political favor, and he began overseeing Leram’s daily activities.
Hoping to spread the Harbingers' power across Mystos, Therion began a pilgrimage throughout the continent to personally meet his sons-in-law and establish what he called Mystosi Embassies, allowing kingdoms to build alliances and trade freely among their people. He first visited Goldspire in 360 SM, where the Harbingers believed Therion would have the hardest time. Lord Dhule refused the idea, forcing Therion to stay in the Summerlands for years.
While in the Summerlands, Therion visited each city but spent most of his time in Presha, where he planned to build the embassy. He became friends with Lord Yassen Rose, who gifted his many daughters to warm Therion's bed, mistaking Therion for a young man who needed to marry. Only one daughter was off limits, Lady Cassia Rose, who was hoped to be promised to a son of House Naidu. Therion impregnated Cassia, and she gave birth to a girl in 363 SM, dying during childbirth. Lord Yassen forced Therion to take the child and leave Presha.
Depressed, Therion attempted to get rid of the child while on his journey back home, but ended up falling in love with his daughter, naming her Rose. Upon his return in 365, he presented Rose to his wife, thinking Phurhace would show the child the same kindness she had shown Menes, but instead Phurhace and Menes' mother took Rose and locked her away in the Tower. He would never see Rose again.
In 366 SM, Phurhace found Therion in his laboratory with his head bashed in. No murderer was found or convicted.
